Shaving and Grooming kit – What’s in yours?   

A really good shave is only possible if you have the right shaving kit. Choosing the right grooming kit is a minefield so, we’ve put together this article to help you decide what you should have in yours. 

A Razor

It goes without saying that the most essential item in any shaving kit is a razor. The type of razor you choose is a matter of personal preference, but we recommend investing in a high-quality razor that will last you a long time. On the whole there are two types of razors: cartridge razors and safety razors. Cartridge razors are easy to use and come with disposable blades, but they can be expensive in the long run. Safety razors are cost-effective and eco-friendly, but they require a lot more skill, time and care to use them effectively.

Shaving Brush

A shaving brush is used to create a lather, lift and soften the hair, and exfoliate the skin. A good shaving brush should be made of high-quality materials, such as badger hair or synthetic fibres, and feel comfortable in your hand. You can either use the brush directly onto your face or use it in conjunction with a soap bowl. Personally, I use mine direct to the face and stubble as the longer contact the shaving cream has with your face the more time the product has to work.

Shaving Cream, Foam or Gel 

A Shaving medium is essential for lubricating the skin and protecting it from razor burn and irritation. If you have sensitive skin or suffer from shaving rash try to choose a natural based formula to minimise any irritation. It really is worth spending some money on this and get the best one your budget allows. Moisturise! 

After shaving, it’s important to soothe and hydrate the skin with a moisturiser. If you are using the Pure Shave shaving cream you may not need to use one as its so effective. However, if you are using a shaving medium that has a skin drying formula as can be found in some Gels and Foams then you may well need to moisturise after shaving.

Pre-Shave Oil or Balm

A pre-shave oil or balm is used to prepare the skin and hair for shaving, reducing the risk of irritation and razor burn. It helps to soften the hair and create a smooth surface for the razor to glide over. At Pure Shave we believe in keeping things simple and cost effective. Shaving Bowl

A shaving bowl is a great piece of shaving kit to have but not essential. It is used to create a lather and keep the shaving cream in place (it can get a bit messy if you are a beginner!). It should be made of a durable material, such as ceramic or metal, and have a non-slip base to prevent it from sliding around.

There can be a trade off between having a large enough bowl to enable the brush to whip up the lather and being a comfortable size to hold.

Shaving Towel

The addition of a shaving towel will give you so many benefits to your shaving routine. It will help to open up the pores and soften facial hair, resulting in a closer and smoother shave. It will help remove excess shaving cream and debris, leaving your face feeling refreshed. Using a specific towel for shaving can prevent damage to regular towels. Styptic Pencil

 A styptic pencil is a handy tool for stopping bleeding from nicks and cuts. It contains aluminum sulfate, which helps to contract the blood vessels and seal the wound. I have only needed to use one when using a safety razor but to be honest that says more about my technique more than anything!!

Conclusion 

The ultimate shaving kit should contain a razor, shaving brush, shaving cream, moisturiser, pre-shave oil, shaving bowl, Towel and styptic pencil. If you take time and effort to invest in best your budget can afford then a shaving kit should last a lifetime.
