Razor burn is one of the top three shaving problems many people face when shaving. It occurs when the skin becomes irritated and inflamed, due to a variety of issues. In this blog post, we will explore the top three shaving problems that people encounter, their causes, and how Pure Shave can provide a solution. Whether you are a seasoned shaver or just starting out, the information in this article will help you achieve a smooth, irritation-free shave.
1 – Razor Burn
One of the most common complaints consumers have when shaving is razor burn and irritation. This can cause redness, bumps, and itching. It is a complaint I have suffered with ever since I started shaving. There are many causes of razor burn. Apart from personal factors like skin type and stubble growth etc. The most common external causes of razor burn stem from one or more of the following.
Shaving Medium
It is all about the ingredients used in foams, gels and creams. In very basic terms, many shaving foams and gels use alcohols in their formula that evaporate when they come in contact with the skin. The rapidly expanding gas causes the formula to ‘foam up’ creating a large volume of the required foam. Why is this a problem? Well, for those who suffer from razor burn these alcohols can dry the skin out and cause irritation.
There are other ingredients that come into play here as well like, Parabens, SLS and some fragrances to name but a few. You can find out more detailed information on what ingredients to avoid in our skincare ingredients buyers guide A-Z
How Pure Shave helps
Disappointment with mainstream products over the years lead me to develop Pure Shave Shaving Cream, so this is a subject close to my heart! I truly believe what you put between you razor and your skin has the biggest impact in the outcome of your shave.
Pure Shave was developed with one thing in mind, to eliminate razor burn and shaving rash. Every ingredient within the shaving cream formula was chosen because it provided some benefit to the skin. Sweet Almond Oil for its high vitamin E content, Coconut Oil for its moisturising properties and Cetyl Alcohol for its ability to soften hair texture. This makes the stubble easier to cut. This last point was key. If hair is soft, you need less pressure to cut it. This means less irritation and therefore less razor burn as a result!
Dull Razor
A blunt razor is the next big factor to cause razor burn. A dull blade requires more force to cut through hair, which increases the likelihood of the blade snagging or dragging across the skin, resulting in cuts, nicks, and razor burn. It can also tug on the hair, pulling it unevenly and causing irritation and inflammation. A blunt razor can also lead to ingrown hairs, where the hair grows back into the skin, causing bumps and redness. As soon as you feel the razor start to ‘catch’ the stubble and you get a pulling, uncomfortable feeling when shaving its time to change your blade.
How Pure Shave Helps
There is anecdotal evidence to suggest that, due to its unique formula Pure Shave shaving cream helps to increase the life of a razor blade – “I have gone 4 months before needing to change a blade whilst using Pure Shave”
Pressure
Applying too much pressure to the blade and skin can cause razor burn. Modern razors are incredibly sharp so let the blade do the work. In a nut shell don’t press too hard! As already discussed above the unique formula of Pure Shave means you do not need to use as much pressure to get a close pain free shave.
2- Cuts and Nicks
Shaving can also lead to cuts and nicks, which can be painful and unsightly. Most of the time when I cut myself while shaving, it’s due to not paying attention and shaving too quickly. Or, I use a blade that is on its way out. Remember to change your blades regularly and try where possible to take time with your shave, after all it should be a relaxing and enjoyable process.
How does Pure Shave help?
We can’t slow you down, change your blades or habits but Pure Shave Shaving cream is a very forgiving medium to shave with. Compared to other creams, gels and foams Pure Shave does speed the process up due to its highly effective formula. It also rinses from the razor very easily and does not clog the blades which helps to speed up the overall shaving process.

3 – Uneven Shaves
Uneven shaves are annoying but inevitable, where some areas remain unshaved and stubble is left behind. This comes down to a number of things but mostly down to the speed of the shave and again using a dull blade. Most shaving mediums will require you to apply a second layer to enable you to tidy up. This can start to get expensive and time consuming if you are constantly having to apply more product to finish your shave off.
How Pure Shave can help?
Apart from the obvious answer of slowing down the shave, something I fail miserably at and changing your blades regularly, Pure Shave can help here as well. When you get to the end of your first pass with a razor, if you wet your hand to check the spots you have missed there will be enough residual shaving cream on your face to enable a ‘tidy up’ pass of the razor without causing any discomfort or shaving rash.
