Give Your Hands Some TLC

Well, we’re nearly 12 months into the pandemic, and it seems that we still have a fair few months ahead of us. Whether we’re in full lockdown, a tiered system, or some other variation of the same, one thing will remain the same – our hands will still be taking the brunt of the impact.

Hands, Face, Space

The current guidance is to wash our hands for at least 20 seconds regularly throughout the day, especially when leaving and arriving home; after you blow your nose, cough or sneeze; and before you eat or handle food. Of course, this is only physical hand-washing and doesn’t take into account additional hand sanitising, which most of us do when entering and leaving a store, and returning to our car.

The Side Effect of Safety

Unsurprisingly, with all this washing, drying and sanitising, the skin on our hands is taking a beating. Our skin has a natural barrier that locks moisture in, but it doesn’t take much before this defence starts to break down.

Many soaps, particularly liquid versions, use sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), a detergent that is incredibly drying to the skin. Combine this with the high alcohol content of hand sanitiser, and it’s no wonder that our hands are dry, cracked and irritated.

How To Avoid Chapped Hands

If you’re battling with dry, dehydrated hands, you’ve probably tried every trick in the book. Slathering them in Vaseline overnight, switching to “sensitive” soaps, maybe even washing them a little less, despite the risks.

At Pure Shave, we’re big believers in the need to nurture and nourish healthy skin. This is why our products have been formulated without moisture-stripping detergents or other hidden nasties. In our experience, we’ve found that one of the best ways to reduce the impact of handwashing on your skin is to choose a soap that is free from SLS and uses a gentler cleansing ingredient.

Faith In Nature offers some great bar soaps that meet these criteria, and as they’re a UK-based company that shares our passion for eco-solutions, they get a double thumbs-up from us! Check them out at your local refill store next time you’re filling up your Pure Shave bottles. Which brings us nicely to…

Moisturise Those Mitts

Bringing life back into your hands is a two-step process. First, reduce the damage by choosing a skin-friendly soap. Second, replace any moisture which has been lost. A rich, creamy moisturiser will do wonders for chapped hands, restoring them to their former glory.

Pure Shave Moisturiser contains Vitamin E, sweet almond oil and coconut oil, which combine to nourish and protect your hands. By integrating regular moisturising into your daily routine, you’ll soon see the difference in the health and condition of your skin.
