Eau de Toilette Buyer’s Guide

Mens Aftershave – A Buyers Guide

When it comes to buying Eau de Toilette, there are a few factors to consider to ensure that you get the best value for your money. This mens aftershave buyer’s guide will help you make an informed decision:

Perfume Strength

Did you know there are different perfume strengths, or perfume concentrations? These strengths indicate the amount of fragrance oils present in a perfume. Understanding the different strengths can help you choose a fragrance that suits your preferences and needs. As a matter of fact the term aftershave can be a bit misleading, as it is a perfume strength in its own right. An aftershave will have a fragrance oil concentration of between 1-3% so is the weakest of all Fragrances. Most consumers tend to use the term in reference to a general fragrance rather than in reference to a fragrances strength.

Eau de Cologne

This is the least concentrated perfume strength, with a fragrance oil concentration of around 2-4%.  Consequently they have a shorter staying power of around 1-2 hours, which makes them great for a quick pick-me-up.

Eau de Toilette

EDT is a medium-strength perfume, with a fragrance oil concentration of around 5-15%. Eau de Toilette fragrances are more long-lasting than Eau de Cologne, with a staying power of around 3-4 hours. They can be reapplied throughout the day. (Most mens aftershaves will be either Eau de Cologne or Eau de Toilette)

Eau de Parfum

Is a high-strength perfume, with a fragrance oil concentration of around 15-20%. As a result eau de parfum fragrances are more intense and long-lasting than Eau de Toilette, with a staying power of around 5-8 hours. They are perfect for evening wear and special occasions.

Parfum

This is the most concentrated perfume strength (and usually the most expensive!), with a fragrance oil concentration of around 20-30%. These fragrances are the most long-lasting, with a staying power of around 8-12 hours. For that reason they are perfect for special occasions and should be used sparingly for an intense and long-lasting scent.

Important Note

The staying power of a fragrance can vary depending on factors such as skin type, weather, and the specific fragrance ingredients. It’s also worth noting that the price of a perfume can often be influenced by its concentration, unsurprisingly, Parfum being the most expensive and Eau de Cologne being the least expensive.

Fragrance Families

Perfumes and mens aftershave can be placed into different scent families based on their predominant fragrance notes. Understanding these different scent patterns can help you identify the types of fragrances you prefer and therefore find new scents that you might enjoy.

Floral

This scent family is characterised by fragrances that contain floral notes such as rose, jasmine, and lily. Floral fragrances are typically feminine and romantic, and they are popular for daytime wear and special occasions. For example ‘Daisy’ by Marc Jacobs

Oriental

These scents are defined by fragrances that contain warm, spicy, and sweet notes such as vanilla, cinnamon, and musk. Oriental fragrances are often considered exotic and sensual, and they are popular for evening wear and special occasions. An excellent choice for this would be Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium.

Woody

This group of scents are fragrances that contain woodsy and earthy notes such as sandalwood, cedar, and patchouli. Woody fragrances are often considered warm and inviting, and they are popular for daytime wear and cooler weather. Tom Ford Oud Wood is our choice here.

Fresh

This group of fragrances contain crisp and clean notes such as citrus, green leaves, and marine notes. Fresh fragrances are typically light and invigorating, and are popular for daytime wear and warmer weather. Light Blue by Dolce & Gabbana is a good one to try.

Chypre

Chypre scents are characterised by fragrances that contain a blend of bergamot, oakmoss, patchouli, and labdanum. As a result chypre fragrances are often considered sophisticated and elegant, and they are popular for evening wear and special occasions. Amber by Pure Shave is an excellent example of this type of scent.

Decisions Decisions Decisions!

If you’re looking for an everyday fragrance that’s light and refreshing, Eau de Cologne or Eau de Toilette might be the best option. However, if you’re looking for a special occasion fragrance that’s more intense and long-lasting, Eau de Parfum or Parfum might be the way to go.

Consider the price

Eau de Toilette fragrances are available in a range of prices, from affordable to high-end. The price may be influenced by factors such as the brand, the size of the bottle, and the ingredients used.

Bottle Size

EDT fragrances are available in different bottle sizes, ranging from small travel-sized bottles to larger bottles that may last several months. On the opposite end of the spectrum Parfum bottles are usually small but you don’t have to use as much! At Pure Shave we have gone with an Eau de Toilette that is 50ml and refillable which will save you money in the long run.
